What is a study permit?
A study permit is a document that approves the education of a foreign national from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. All international students require a study permit to study in Canada.
Here, it should be taken into account that your study permit is not a visa and does not allow you entry into Canada. You will need a visitor visa or an eTA (electronic travel authorization) to enter Canada and then apply for a study permit while staying in Canada.
Who can apply?
You must meet certain eligibility criteria to apply and qualify for the Study Permit. The Canadian government establishes these criteria to assess the eligibility of a student entering Canada. These eligibility criteria are as follows-
- An acceptance letter from a Canadian DLI (Designated Learning Institute)
- Proof of sufficient funds to sustain yourself and your family, if any
- A clearance certificate from the police in your home country stating that you do not have any prior criminal record
- Medical evaluation certificates to establish that you are in good health and are willing to undergo medical tests if asked.
- Assure a visa officer that you will leave Canada as soon as your study permit expires
- Must be proficient in English or French and satisfy the Canadian Language Benchmark
You can also get a study permit faster through the Student Direct Stream if you are a legal resident of certain countries like Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines, Trinidad, and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, and Vietnam.
Required Documents
To meet the eligibility criteria, you have to provide some documents supporting your Study Permit application. These documents are as follows-
- A letter of acceptance from the DLI you enrolled in
- Valid passport and travel documents
- Two passport-sized photographs
- Proof of sufficient funds, like- bank statements, bank drafts, and more, for your stay in Canada

After gaining experience, you can apply for Permanent Residence under the Canadian Experience Class. Sirsma Immigration Services is one of the best immigration agencies in Canada and will assist you with your study permit to your permanent residence status.
Processing Time
The processing time for your study permit varies greatly, depending on several factors. The shortest processing time could be around 1-2 weeks, whereas in some cases, you could have to wait as long as 16 weeks.
Note: If you are applying for a Study Permit around the same time as the start of a Canadian academic year, you might face delays.
Application Fees
A standard Canadian Study Permit application fee is around CAD$150. However, there is an additional CAD$85, that you have to pay as biometrics fees. This is a one-time cost covering the cost of photos taken and the fingerprints.
